Preservation and Public Awareness

Aside from the opportunity to live as Civil War soldiers on campaign, a secondary goal of Into the Piney Woods is to raise public awareness regarding the oft-overlooked Red River Campaign of 1864.

Confederate Memorial Hall museum, the “Battle Abbey of the South,” has been selected as the focus of preservation efforts.  Memorial Hall is located in New Orleans, Louisiana and features a fantastic collection of flags, uniform items, original images, and weapons.  The roof of the museum was severely damaged during Hurricane Katrina and repairs are just now being made.  The museum is presently closed but is due to reopen early in 2009.  Those flying into New Orleans International Airport should make the short drive over to see this wonderful resource.  This important icon and its valuable collections need our assistance!

Check out the Memorial Hall webpage at www.confederatemuseum.com

We are also thrilled to announce that renowned Trans-Mississippi authors Dr. Gary Joiner and Steve Mayeux will be on-site to autograph books and visit with participants!  Both men have contributed significant scholarship to the Trans-Mississippi theater of operations and specifically to the Red River Campaign.  They will have copies of their work available for purchase at the conclusion of the event.

Those familiar with Texas Ground Hornets events such as the Mansfield to Pleasant Hill Preservation March (2004) and Banks’ Grand Retreat(2007), Into the Piney Woods will feature a raffle with all proceeds going to preservation efforts.
